Last week, it was reported that the 5-door Thar was set to be unveiled at a Mahindra event on August 15. The automaker made a Twitter post today, putting the rumours to rest. The rumours suggested that the Thar will be unveiled at a Mahindra event in South Africa. Mahindra confirmed that the launch of the 5-door Thar is scheduled for 2024.

Mahindra made the following announcement on a Twitter post: “With reference to multiple media reports indicating that the much-awaited Mahindra Thar 5-Door will debut at a Mahindra event in South Africa on August 15, we would like to clarify that the launch is not scheduled for this year. During the recently conducted Quarter Results media interaction, we confirmed that the launch of Thar 5-Door is scheduled for 2024 in India.”
While the 5-door Thar may not be launching in India this year, Mahindra may release a few teasers in the following months. The lifestyle SUV was last spotted testing back in February, in what appeared to be the final testing phase. All signs seem to suggest that Mahindra is ready to take the SUV into the production stage.
When it comes to the powertrain, the 5-door Thar is confirmed to get 2 engine options – 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Mahindra will also launch an entry-level 2WD version of the SUV. It will, however, miss out on the 1.5-litre diesel engine which is found in the entry-level variants of the 3-door Thar. The option of an automatic transmission will be reserved solely for 4×4 variants.
The 5-door Thar will be underpinned by Scorpio N’s platform. Since it will be longer than 4 metres, it will not be eligible for additional tax benefits. In terms of design, it will retain the boxy look of its 3-door sibling, while adding two rear doors. Mahindra may add the option of a third seating row on the 5-door Thar.

Bookings for the 5-door Thar will commence soon after its debut. The lifestyle SUV will face stiff competition from the recently launched 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny. It will also lock horns with Force Gurkha.
