Hyundai Exter: An instant success

Hyundai Exter is the first ‘compact’ SUV offering from the automaker, a category that is slowly gaining a lot of ground in India. With the Exter, Hyundai has captured the interest of a lot of first-time car buyers in the country, who now have the option of buying an SUV at a very affordable price. Prices for the Exter start at Rs 6 lakh and go up to Rs 10.50 lakh for the top-spec variant.

Hyundai Exter stands at dimensions of 3,815mm x 1,710mm x 1,631mm. The SUV has a boxy design and sports an upright posture. The wide grille at the front is flanked on either side by sleek LED headlamps and DRLs. At the back, the SUV retains its boxy design and the LED tail lamps mimic the shape of the headlamps. The Exter rests on 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. There are 6 monotone and 3 dual-tone paint schemes on offer.

Even though the Hyundai Exter is an entry-level compact SUV, it gets a bunch of exciting features. It shares its interior design language with other Hyundai offerings like the Aura and Grand i10 Nios. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and the fully digital 4.2-inch instrument cluster comes with support for multiple Indian languages. The SUV also gets a single-pane sunroof and a dashcam with front and rear cameras.

Powering the SUV is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. This engine can produce a maximum power output of 83hp and 114Nm of torque. It can be paired with a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. The Exter shares this engine with the Grand i10 Nios, Aura, i20, and Venue. The CNG variants produce a maximum power output of 69hp and 95.2Nm of torque. It does not get an AMT gearbox option. The manual petrol variants of the Exter offer a mileage of 19.4 kmpl, while the AMT variants offer 19.2 kmpl. In CNG guise, Hyundai claims a mileage of 27.10 kmpl for the Exter.

Conclusion

Even though the Exter is Hyundai’s cheapest SUV in India, the automaker has included six airbags as a standard feature on the SUV. This has vastly propelled its popularity in the country. Hyundai also plans on exporting the compact SUV to foreign markets. In India, Hyundai Exter rivals the likes of Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, and Citroen C3.
