Key Highlights

  • The new Hyundai Creta EV is expected to launch by the end of the year.
  • Recent spy shots suggest that the all-electric Creta will be based on its ICE counterpart.
  • The electric SUV could share its powertrain with the Kona EV.

An all-electric Creta SUV has been in the pipeline for almost a year. The EV has been spotted testing on Indian roads on multiple occasions. However, a new set of leaked images suggests that the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV will be based on the facelifted version of the ICE SUV which was recently introduced in the market. So far, Hyundai has kept a tight lid on the specs and design of the electric SUV.

Hyundai Creta EV: Here’s everything we know so far

The test unit of the Hyundai Creta EV which was spied on recently was draped in heavy camouflage. However, some details suggest that the EV will be based on the facelifted version of its ICE sibling. The LED DRLs and headlamps peeking through the camouflage on the test module look identical to the ones found on the Creta ICE facelift. On the facelifted model, these L-shaped fragmented DRLs are connected by a light bar that runs across the grille. The LED tail lamps at the rear follow the same design language.

The Hyundai Creta EV will get some EV-exclusive design changes as well. Up front, it will feature a shut-off grille, which is the norm for most electric cars. The charging port could be housed on the nose of the SUV, similar to the Kona EV. The spy shots also confirm the presence of a new set of aero-focussed alloy wheels. While the test unit featured 17-inch alloys, Hyundai could add an 18-inch option to the production model. Apart from the alloy wheels, the EV and the ICE models will sport the same profile.

ICE Creta facelift

The interior layout of the Hyundai Creta EV is expected to be similar to its ICE facelift counterpart. Hyundai could also borrow some elements from its Ioniq 5 EV. The dashboard on the new ICE Creta facelift is integrated with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and another 10.25-inch display for the digital instrument cluster. Below the dual screens is housed a newly designed console for the dual-zone climate control system. This console features physical buttons as well.

The Hyundai Creta EV will get a 45kWh battery pack. This battery can deliver a driving range of 250km on a full charge. Interestingly, the MG ZS EV and Maruti’s upcoming eVX have larger battery packs (50.3kWh and 48/60kWh). It remains to be seen whether Hyundai will add a larger battery pack variant to the lineup. The electric SUV could share its powertrain with the Hyundai Kona EV, which is sold overseas. The front-axle-mounted single electric motor on the entry-level Kona EV produces a maximum power output of 138hp and 255Nm.

Conclusion

The Hyundai Creta EV is on schedule to launch by the end of 2024. Expect the automaker to drop teasers for the EV in the coming months. The entry-level variant of the all-electric Creta could be priced between Rs 18 lakh – Rs 20 lakh. Once launched, the Creta EV will rival the upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX, Honda Elevate EV, MG ZS EV, and Tata Nexon EV.
