5-door Mahindra Thar to be made available in multiple powertrain options

The highly anticipated 5-door Mahindra Thar will likely be made available in multiple powertrain options, much like its 3-door sibling. The lifestyle SUV has been spotted testing multiple times in the last couple of months and could be launching very soon. While many expected a January launch for the 5-door Thar, Mahindra decided to release a 2WD variant of the 3-door Thar instead. Several speculations have been floating around regarding the upcoming 5-door Thar’s powertrains. Here’s what we know so far.

5-door Mahindra Thar: Powertrain, underpinnings, and more

Like its 3-door predecessor, the 5-door Mahindra Thar is set to get a RWD variant as well. However, Mahindra will not be offering a 1.5-litre diesel engine unit with this entry-level variant, unlike the 3-door Thar. It is also not under 4 meters in length, which means it doesn’t qualify for additional tax benefits. However, the lack of AWD will help in bringing the prices down. Recent spy shots of the upcoming Thar’s interior show empty glove space in place of the 4×4 lever, confirming the speculations.

In terms of powertrain, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be offered with a 2.2-litre diesel engine and 2.0-litre petrol engine options. The 2WD variants will come with a 6-speed manual transmission while there will be an option for an automatic gearbox for the 4×4 variants. Mahindra has not revealed any power and torque output numbers for the new Thar yet.

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be underpinned by Scorpio N’s platform. This means that it will be slightly bigger than its 3-door counterpart. Currently, the 3-door Thar stands at a length of 3,985mm with a wheelbase of 2,450mm. The 5-door Thar will retain its offroading chops despite a larger wheelbase.

Inside, the five-door Thar will benefit from the increased boot space. Mahindra may offer the new Thar with a third row and six or seven-seater options. Currently, the 2020 Thar can only seat four people at best. The dashboard design and equipment list of the 5-door Mahindra Thar will also be carried forward from its 3-door sibling, but Mahindra may add new drive modes that we previously saw on the Scorpio N.

Conclusion

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be launched in the coming months. Mahindra could price it up to Rs 2 lakh more than its 3-door counterpart. After launch, the new Thar will rival other lifestyle SUVs like Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
