Bookings open for Hyundai Bayon

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has started accepting bookings for its upcoming midsize SUV. Buyers can book a unit of the Hyundai Bayon for a token amount of Rs 11,000. Bookings can be made online or at Hyundai dealerships across the country. The automaker has also revealed some details about the SUV’s design, platform, powertrain, and features.

Hyundai Bayon: Here’s what we know so far

The global version of the Bayon is a crossover version of the i20 hatchback. The India-spec model will have SUV-like proportions. Hyundai India has confirmed that the Bayon is a 4.2m-long midsize SUV with broad proportions. It is built on the Global K Enhanced Platform, which is engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards. 

The front fascia of the SUV features a sculpted bonnet design, a split headlamp setup, and H-shaped LED DRLs. The bumper has an integrated skid plate. Along the sides, the SUV gets geometric wheel arches, wrap-around door cladding, and bridge-type roof rails. At the back, it gets a prominent roof-mounted spoiler. The H-shaped tail lamps are connected by a sleek LED light bar.

Inside, the Hyundai Bayon will borrow a lot of styling elements from the fourth-gen i20 that recently went on sale in Brazil. The steering wheel will have the illuminated 4 dots signifying ‘H’ in Morse code. A twin-screen display setup will cater to the infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster. The AC vents will be vertically aligned. Hyundai has confirmed that the SUV will have a built-in generative AI assistant. You can expect a host of safety features too.

While Hyundai has not revealed which engine will power the Bayon, it has confirmed that the SUV will come with MT and IVT gearbox options. We expect it to be powered by the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that does duty on the Creta SUV. It generates a maximum power output of 115hp. There will be a CNG version of this engine on offer too, reportedly with an underbody tank to save boot space.

Final Thoughts

The Bayon will be positioned between the Venue and Creta in Hyundai India’s portfolio. We expect its prices to start at Rs 9 lakh. The automaker is planning a festive season launch for the SUV. Upon hitting the market, it will rival the Tata Curvv and Citroen Basalt.
