Bharat NCAP awards Renault Duster a 5-star safety rating

The Renault Duster has received a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP. The SUV launched in March at an introductory price of Rs 10.29 lakh. BNCAP crash tested the Evolution (1.3L MT), Techno (1.3L DCT), and Iconic (1.3L MT) variants of the Duster. The 5-star rating is applicable to all variants of the SUV across the three powertrains.

Renault Duster: BNCAP results explained

In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) test, the Renault Duster scored 30.49 points out of a possible 32. This includes 14.49 points out of 16 in the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier test and 16 points out of 16 in the Side Movable Deformable Barrier test. Upon frontal collision, the SUV showed good protection to the driver’s head, neck, pelvis, and thighs. Meanwhile, the chest, tibia, and feet were adequately protected. The passenger was well-protected overall. In the side and pole collisions, the SUV showed good protection to all parts of the driver’s body.

In the Child Occupant Protection (COP) test, the Duster scored 45 points out of a possible 49. This includes a Dynamic score of 24 points out of 24, a CRS installation score of 12 points out of 12, and a Vehicle Assessment score of 9 points out of 13. The SUV was crash tested using rearward-facing dummies for 18-month-old and 3-year-old children.

Safety features on the Renault Duster include 6 airbags, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and more. There is a Level 2 ADAS package on board as well.

The SUV comes in 2 engine options. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 100hp and 160Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission only. The 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 163hp and 280Nm. It can be linked to a 6-speed manual or DCT gearbox. A strong-hybrid petrol engine will join the lineup by Diwali.

Final Thoughts

Prices for the Renault Duster start at Rs 10.49 lakh and go up to Rs 20.09 lakh. The dual-tone colour variants demand a premium of Rs 20,000. The midsize SUV rivals the Tata SierraMaruti Suzuki Grand VitaraToyota Urban Cruiser HyRyderKia SeltosVolkswagen TaigunHyundai CretaSkoda Kushaq, and Honda Elevate in India.
