Amidst dwindling sales, the Tesla Model Y has been updated with a new long wheelbase variant. Dubbed the Model Y ‘L Premium’, it slots between the Premium and Long Range Premium variants. It is priced at Rs 61.99 lakh. It is the only Model Y variant to get an All Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration. The EV can seat 6 people with its 2 + 2 + 2 seating layout.

Tesla Model Y L: What’s new?

Here is the price list for the Model Y lineup.

Variant Price
Premium RWD Rs 59.89 lakh
L Premium RWD Rs 61.99 lakh
Long Range Premium RWD Rs 67.89 lakh

The Model Y L is available in 6 paint shades. The Stealth Grey and Black shades are offered as standard, with no extra charge. The Pearl White Multi-Coat and Diamond Black shades demand a premium of Rs 95,000. The Glacier Blue shade requires an additional charge of Rs 1.25 lakh. Lastly, the Ultra Red and Cosmic Silver shades cost Rs 1.85 lakh extra.

The Tesla Model Y L stands at dimensions of 4,976mm x 1,982mm x 1,668mm. It has a 3,040mm wheelbase, which is 150mm longer than the standard Model Y variant. Overall, the L variant is 179mm longer than the regular model.

Cosmetically, the Model Y L is almost identical to the regular version of the EV. The front fascia remains unchanged, as does the rear section, bar some slight rework on the boot lid spoiler. The profile reveals a refreshed roofline that has been updated to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the electric SUV. The biggest distinguishing factor is a new design for the 19-inch Machina 2.0 alloy wheels.

The Model Y L gets all-black interiors as standard. Buyers can opt for a dual-tone black and grey colour theme for a premium of Rs 95,000. The big appeal of this variant is its 6-seat capacity. The middle row has individual captain seats with ventilation, heating, and one-touch fold functions. The armrests are electronically operated. The third row seats get the recline and one-touch fold functions along with dedicated AC vents.

The instrumentation and features on the new Model Y L have been retained from the standard model. Its dashboard flaunts a 16-inch central display. The middle row passengers get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Other features include powered front seats with heating and ventilation, heated steering and windshield, a panoramic glass sunroof, ambient lighting, and more.

The Model Y L is the only variant in the entire lineup to get an All Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration. Its dual motor setup generates a maximum power output of 514hp and 590Nm torque. The EV can go from 0-100km/h in 5 seconds. The 88.2kWh battery pack offers a 681km driving range – the highest out of all three variants.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of the L variant will give the Model Y a much-needed boost in sales. It comes with a 4-year/80,000km warranty. The battery and drive unit have a warranty of 8 years/1,92,000km. The electric SUV rivals the Volvo EC40, Kia EV6, BMW iX1 LWB, Mercedes-Benz EQA, and BYD Sealion 7 in India.
