MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV launched, prices start at Rs 25.70 lakh

The plug-in version of the MG Hector Tomahawk was launched alongside its all-electric counterpart today. Prices for the PHEV lineup start at Rs 25.70 lakh and go up to Rs 27.80 lakh. There are 2 trim levels on offer – Exclusive and Essence. The BaaS range starts at Rs 21.79 lakh. The SUV can go up to 1,100km on a full tank of petrol and a fully charged battery. In electric-only mode, it offers a driving range of over 115km.

The MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV is dimensionally identical to its all-electric counterpart. It is 4,745mm long, 1,850mm wide, and 1,770mm tall, with a 2,810mm wheelbase. On the design front, the plug-in hybrid model distinguishes itself from the EV with a large grille up front. The area under the headlamps receives a gloss-black garnish and chrome highlights. The bumper has a silver trim that gives it a chunkier look. The profile reveals thick body cladding, 18-inch alloys, and a white roof. At the back, the SUV gets a dual-tone bumper, a clean tailgate, and wraparound LED tail lamps.

Inside, the Hector Tomahawk PHEV gets the same instrumentation and features as its all-electric sibling. There’s a free-standing 15.6-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system on the dashboard with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The driver’s cockpit gets an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The centre console is equipped with cup holders, storage spaces, and a wireless charging pad.

Other features include a 10-speaker Infinity sound system, gesture controls for AC and audio settings, 256-colour ambient lighting, ventilated and powered front seats, PM2.5 air filtration, a powered tailgate, rear window sunshades, a 360-degree camera, and more. On the safety front, the SUV gets 6 airbags, front parking sensors, ESP, traction control, TPMS, and Level 2 ADAS.

Under the hood, the MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine mated to a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 20.5kWh battery pack. The petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 102hp and 125Nm of torque by itself. Meanwhile, the electric motor puts out 201hp and 237Nm. The combined output is balanced at 198hp and 230Nm. 

There are 4 drive modes on offer – Pure EV (running on the electric motor alone), Series Hybrid (ICE engine recharges the battery while the car runs on the electric motor), Parallel Hybrid (ICE and electric system power the car together), and Engine Direct Drive (ICE system alone powers the car). The driver doesn’t need to manually select these modes; the SUV automatically switches among them, depending on the speed, road conditions, charge level, and other factors.

The 20.5kWh battery pack has a driving range of 115km. The combined range comes out to 1,100km. A 35kW DC charger can take the battery pack from 30-80% in 35 minutes. A 3.3kW AC charger can take it from 10-100% in 7.5 hours.

Final Thoughts

MG Motor has started accepting bookings for the Hector Tomahawk PHEV. Its deliveries will start rolling out in November. The SUV rivals the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari in India.
