Mercedes GLB SUV discontinued in India

Mercedes has discontinued the GLB SUV in India. Mercedes GLB was launched in India in December 2022 alongside the EQB SUV. It was imported from Mexico as a Completely Built Up (CBU) unit. Mercedes has sold all the imported units of the SUV. The GLB was priced between Rs 64.80 lakh and Rs 71.80 lakh.

Mercedes GLB: A brief 2-year stint

The Mercedes GLB was available in 3 variants – GLB 200, GLB 220d, and GLB 220d 4MATIC. There were 2 powertrains on offer. The 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine produced a maximum power output of 163hp and 250Nm of torque. It was linked to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The GLB 220d and 220d 4MATIC variants were powered by a 2.0-litre diesel unit. This engine generated a maximum power output of 190hp and 400Nm of torque. This engine came with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The Mercedes GLB was refreshed in 2023 with a facelifted model. The updated model features a new front grille, refreshed bumpers, and other important tweaks. This model also comes with a mild-hybrid powertrain. However, the GLB facelift has not been launched in India yet. The model that was retailed in India had 18-inch alloy wheels, a dual-slat grille, and chrome highlights on the exterior. The GLB 220d variants got 19-inch five-spoke alloys and a special AMG-themed grille. Inside, the SUV rocked a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Mercedes EQB, which went on sale alongside the GLB, is still available in India. It is priced between Rs 72.70 lakh and Rs 78.90 lakh. This electric SUV is powered by a dual-electric motor that produces a maximum power output of 228hp. The 350 4Matic variant generates a maximum power output of 292hp. The 66.5kWh battery pack offer a driving range of 419km on a full charge.

Final Thoughts

During its brief stint in India, the Mercedes GLB rivalled the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Volvo XC60, BMW X1, and Audi Q3. The automaker plans on launching the next-gen GLB globally next year. This model has been spotted testing on multiple occasions in Europe. It is underpinned by the MMA platform that also does duty on the 3rd-generation CLA. Mercedes has confirmed that it will bring the GLB SUV back to India. However, the automaker has not specified whether it will launch the 2023 facelifted model of the SUV or the next-gen model that is slated to go on sale next year.
