Kia Carens and Carens Clavis get CNG powertrain

Kia India has expanded its midsize MPV lineup to offer a CNG powertrain. The Kia Carens CNG comes in a single Premium (O) trim priced at Rs 12.12 lakh, while the Carens Clavis CNG is available in HTE and HTE (O) options with prices starting at Rs 12.39 lakh. All three CNG variants demand a premium of Rs 1 lakh over their petrol counterparts.

In a CNG guise, the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine powering the Kia Carens and Carens Clavis generates a maximum power output of 96hp and 123Nm of torque. This is 19hp and 21Nm lower than the petrol engine. The CNG models are only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The petrol variants get iMT and DCT options. Kia has not revealed the mileage specs of its CNG MPVs yet.

The CNG tank is placed under the boot floor of the two MPVs. It eats into the storage space considerably, reducing the boot space capacity from 216 litres to 116 litres. The spare wheel is mounted under the body. The suspension has been retuned, and the front disc brakes have been upgraded to account for the additional weight. 

The Carens and Carens Clavis are also available in 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engine options. The former produces a maximum power output of 160hp and 253Nm on torque. Meanwhile, the diesel engine churns out 116hp and 250Nm.

The Carens Clavis comes in an all-electric avatar as well. There are 2 battery pack options on offer – 42kWh (404km range, ARAI) and 51.4kWh (490km range, ARAI). The electric motor is mounted on the front axle and produces a maximum power output of 135hp on the 42kWh variants and 171hp on the 51.4kWh variants. The torque remains consistent on all variants – 255Nm.

Final Thoughts

Last year, Kia had introduced a CNG option for the Carens, but it was only available as a dealer-level fitment. Bookings for the new factory-fitted CNG models have been open since September 10. They rival the CNG variants of the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Toyota Rumion, and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
