Hyundai Creta: Still the midsize SUV king

The Hyundai Creta shaped the midsize SUV segment in India, back when it was launched in July 2025. Since then, it has enjoyed steady and continuous success in the market. In 2016, the SUV’s first full calendar year in India, it amassed 92,926 sales. This number grew to 189,919 units in 2024. This year, the Creta has surpassed 200,000 calendar year sales for the first time. It has recorded a remarkable CAGR of over 9% between 2016 and 2025. As things stand, the Creta commands a 34% market share in the midsize SUV segment.

Hyundai Creta’s versatile powertrain is one of the primary drivers behind its success. The SUV is available in 3 engine options. The 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines generate a maximum power output of 115hp. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine puts out 160hp. All three engines can be mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed DCT gearbox.

When it comes to premium features, the SUV leaves no stone unturned. It rocks a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch display for the digital instrument cluster, a dual-zone climate control system, an air purifier, a Bose sound system, a 360-degree camera, a sunroof, an electronic parking brake, USB Type-C ports for the rear passengers, and more. There’s also a Level 2 ADAS package on board.

Mr Tarun Garg, Managing Director & CEO designate, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said, “Hyundai CRETA journey in India is nothing short of extraordinary and achieving highest-ever annual sales of more than 2 lakhs units is a proud and defining moment for all of us at Hyundai. It is also the highest selling SUV of our country on a cumulative basis from 2020-2025. Infact, over the past 10 years of its journey in India, CRETA’s customer base has grown manifold, transforming it from a capable SUV into a trusted companion for every journey. The brand’s momentum also reflects in the rise of first-time buyers – from 13% in 2020 to an impressive 32% in 2025. Aspirations of CRETA customers have also evolved over the years, with sunroof-equipped variants contributing more than 70% of CRETA’s sales in 2025. In addition, the diesel powertrain contributes a strong 44% share to CRETA sales. We are deeply grateful to our customers and dealer partners for making CRETA a symbol of Hyundai’s trust, innovation and commitment.”
