Volkswagen Tayron: Euro NCAP results explained

The Volkswagen Tayron secured an 87% rating in the Adult Occupant Protection Test, scoring 35.1 points out of a possible 40. After frontal impact, the driver’s and passenger’s knees and femurs showed good protection. In the side barrier test, the SUV offered good protection to the critical body areas. In the side pole impact test, the chest of the driver showed marginal protection.

In the Child Occupant Protection Test, the Volkswagen Tayron scored 41.7 points out of a possible 49, securing an 85% rating. In the frontal offset and side barrier tests, the SUV offered good protection to the critical body parts. The front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rear-facing child restraint system to be used in that position. The SUV is also equipped with a ‘child presence detection’ system, which issues a warning when it recognises that a child or infant may have been left in the car.

In the Vulnerable Road Users test, the Tayron scored 63 points out of a possible 63, securing an 83% rating. This included 30.2 points out of 36 in the VRU Impact Protection Test and 22.8 points out of 27 in the VRU Impact Mitigation Test. The Euro NCAP noted that the protection of the head of a struck pedestrian was predominantly good or adequate. However, the stiff windscreen pillars and the base and top of the screen recorded poor results. Good protection was offered to the pelvis, femur, and knee, and tibia, at all test locations. Lastly, in the Safety Assist test, the SUV scored 14.5 points out of a possible 18, securing an 80% rating.

Final Thoughts

The Europe-spec model of Volkswagen Tayron gets assist systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, and more as standard. Its standard safety features include front airbags for driver and passenger, curtain and side airbags and the front and rear, a centre airbag at the front, Hill Start Assist, Electronic Stability Control, and more. The Tayron will be imported to India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. It will be more affordable than the Tiguan R-Line. Upon launch, it will rival the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, Citroen C5 Aircross, and Toyota Fortuner.
