Toyota announces a new manufacturing plant in Maharashtra

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has announced its plans to build a new vehicle manufacturing plant in the Bidkin Industrial Area, Maharashtra, India. The new plant is expected to start production in the first half of 2029. It will cater not only to India but also to the surrounding regions. Toyota says that the first vehicle to roll out of the Bidkin plant will be a ‘new SUV’, reportedly the Land Cruiser FJ.

Toyota’s Bidkin plant will produce 1 lakh vehicles per year

Toyota will kick off production in its Bidkin plant in the first half of 2029. It will have a production capacity of 1,00,000 vehicles per year. The plant will employ approximately 2,800 people. The main processes include stamping, welding, and assembly.

Toyota Innova HyCross

The first Toyota plant in India was established in Bidadi back in October 1997. It began production in December 1999. This plant has an annual production capacity of 1.32 lakh vehicles, and produces popular Toyota offerings like the Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Legender. The second plant in Bidadi began production in December 2010. Its production capacity is 2.10 lakh units per year. This facility produces cars like the Camry Hybrid, Urban Cruiser HyRyder, and Hilux.

Defining its vision for the new plant, Toyota India had the following to say: “Toyota’s business in India has progressed together with those who pioneered the Indian market, with Toyota receiving invaluable learning and support from those pioneers.

With deep appreciation, Toyota will continue strengthening its production structure to enable flexible response to future demand growth and market changes in India and surrounding regions, and to deliver products in a timely manner that customers choose.

Through the new plant, and with the continued support of many stakeholders and local communities, Toyota will continue to contribute to the development of India’s automotive industry and society.”

Final Thoughts

The Bidkin Industrial Area is already home to automakers like JSW and Ather. Toyota’s current production area in India spans approximately 432 acres. The automaker permanently employs 6,466 people. It produces up to 3.42 lakh units per year through its two manufacturing facilities.
