Tata Sierra to get AWD in 2027

Yesterday, Tata Sierra made a comeback in the Indian market after decades. Tata’s new take on its iconic Sierra SUV from 1991 is as refreshing as it is thrilling. Prices for the SUV start at Rs 11.49 lakh. It comes in 7 trim levels. All 7 trims support Front Wheel Drive (FWD). The automaker has confirmed that it will introduce an All Wheel Drive (AWD) configuration for the SUV in 2027. This will make the Sierra Tata’s first ICE SUV with AWD since the Hexa.

Tata Sierra: The road ahead

The 2025 Sierra is underpinned by Tata’s new All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable (ARGOS) platform. This platform allows multiple body styles, vehicle lengths, and powertrains. Tata has already teased an all-electric powertrain for the SUV. Given the versatility of the platform, the automaker has also mentioned that an AWD version of the Sierra is also in the works. This configuration will make it to electric and ICE powertrains. As of now, Tata is thinking about introducing it in 2027. It will make its debut on the Sierra EV, followed by the ICE model.

The ICE model is currently available in three engine options. Tata’s new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, TGDI ‘Hyperion’ petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 158hp and 255Nm torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated ‘Revotron’ petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 105hp and 145Nm torque. This engine can be mated to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Lastly, the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, ‘Kryojet’ diesel engine puts out 116hp. With a 6-speed manual transmission, it produces 260Nm torque. This output increases to 280Nm when the engine is linked to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

When it comes to features and creature comforts, the Tata Sierra is one of the most decked-out SUVs in its category. Its dashboard rocks a triple-screen setup comprising a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, and another 12.3-inch entertainment display. There’s support for wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other premium features include a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker JBL audio system with Dolby Atmos, dual-zone air conditioning, ventilated front seats, a 6-way powered driver’s seat with memory, thigh support extender, ambient lighting, a head-up display, an air purifier with AQI display, an illuminated cooled glovebox, wireless charging, and more.

On the safety front, the Sierra packs 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, rear occupant sensor, perimetric alarm sensor, a 360-degree Surround View System, and a Level 2 ADAS package. There are 22 features on the ADAS suite. The SUV’s Bharat NCAP crash test results are expected to come out in the following weeks.

Final Thoughts

The AWD configuration will most likely be made available on the top-spec Adventure and Adventure+ trims of the Sierra. It will demand a sizeable premium. The full price list of the FWD variants will be revealed in the next few days. The booking window for the SUV will open on December 16, with the delivery rollout planned from January 15.
