Renault Triber to get turbo-petrol and CNG powertrains this year

Ever since the launch of the Renault Triber in 2019, buyers have shown a keen interest in opting for the MPV with a turbo-petrol engine. In 2021, the turbo-petrol powertrain arrived on the Kiger SUV, but Triber buyers were still left waiting. Last year, when the MPV was facelifted, the turbo powertrain was nowhere to be seen. This is set to change this year, as Renault will update the MPV with a 1-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine in the festive season. A factory-fitted, dual-cylinder CNG kit will also be added to the Triber.

Renault Triber: Big updates under the hood

The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is internally codenamed ‘HR10’. It is derived from the Duster’s 1.3-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine. On the Kiger and Magnite, it generates a maximum power output of 100hp and 160Nm torque. It can be mated to a 5-speed manual or CVT gearbox. The Triber is also expected to get these two transmission options for this engine.

After the launch of the Triber in India, Renault started offering it with a retrofitted CNG kit in certain cities. Come October, the automaker will offer the MPV with a factory-fitted kit. It will employ a split-cylinder setup, often seen in Tata’s offerings, for the tanks. These cylinders will be placed under the boot floor. The turbo-petrol engine will power this CNG model.

In order to accommodate the new powertrains, Renault has tweaked the CMF-A platform underpinning the Triber. The updated platform has been rebranded as Renault Global Compact Platform (RGCP). This allows the automaker to stack the dual CNG cylinders under the boot floor.

Renault Triber is currently powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that generates a maximum power output of 72hp and 96Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

In terms of features, the MPV flaunts an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, second and third row AC vents, a start/stop push button, and wireless charging. Safety features include 6 airbags (standard), a 360-degree camera, ABS, front parking sensors, cruise control, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sensor, traction control, hill hold assist, and ISOFIX child anchorages.

Final Thoughts

Prices for the current Renault Triber range start at Rs 5.76 lakh and go up to Rs 8.60 lakh. The turbo-petrol engine will be exclusively available on the top variants. It will demand a premium price. As things stand, the Triber rivals the Maruti Suzuki ErtigaToyota Rumion, and Kia Carens in India.
