Next-gen Suzuki Swift showcased at Tokyo Motor Show

The new 4th-gen Suzuki Swift was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show earlier today. The hatchback will launch in India next year as the all-familiar Maruti Suzuki Swift. While Suzuki is still calling the 4th-gen hatchback a ‘concept’, it looks very close to the finished product.

4th-gen Suzuki Swift: What to expect?

The new Suzuki Swift broke cover earlier this month as the automaker revealed official images for the concept car online. The hatchback made its first public appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show. Suzuki Swift retains the signature design of the hatchback while tweaking the design of the LED headlamps and making the nose flatter than before. The grille is wider than the outgoing model and features rounded edges. It also gets a gloss black and chrome finish. The Suzuki logo is placed just above the grille.

Inside, the Suzuki Swift gets a dual-tone dashboard along with a free-standing 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a digital driver display onboard. The hatchback also gets wireless charging, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and an electric sunroof. Suzuki Swift also gets an ADAS package, although it is uncertain whether the India-spec model will get it too.

The K12 engine powering the current-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift will be replaced by a Z12 (codename) engine. This is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine. So far, Suzuki has kept a tight lid on its power and torque specs. The Suzuki Swift concept showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show had a hybrid engine option, but it is unlikely that it will be offered in the model sold in India. More details will be made public in the coming months.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, the 4th-gen Suzuki Swift will make its way to India in 2024. Currently, the Maruti Swift is one of the best-selling hatchbacks in the Indian market. With a new platform underpinning the hatchback, Suzuki could also be looking into developing an electric version of the Swift.
