Next-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift will get the new 3-cylinder petrol engine

Key Highlights

  • The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by a 4-cylinder K-Series petrol engine.
  • The new 3-cylinder engine is expected to match the power and torque specs of the outgoing model.
  • Maruti Suzuki is yet to reveal more details about this engine.

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift was showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show last month. The next-gen Swift gets an updated design inside and out along with some significant changes under the hood. The automaker has confirmed that the 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine showcased in Japan will also make its way to the India-spec Swift.

2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift: New engine, same specs

The new 3-cylinder 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine on the 4th-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift has been codenamed Z12E. It replaces the 4-cylinder K12 petrol engine that produces a maximum power output of 89hp and 113Nm of torque. The Z12E will be mated to a CVT gearbox and will come with mild hybrid tech. Transmission options for the K12 engine include a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox.

Maruti Suzuki says that it favours the Z12E engine due to its low-end torque and higher fuel efficiency. The CVT gearbox will also play a role in boosting the fuel economy of the hatchback. The automaker has kept the power and torque specs of the Z12E under a tight lid, but it is expected to match the numbers produced by the current K12 engine.

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift also gets significant changes to its design. The nose of the LED is flatter and the LED headlamps get a sleeker look than the outgoing model. The new grille is wider and gets rounded edges. It also gets a gloss black and chrome finish. The Suzuki logo is placed just above the grille.

Inside, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift gets a dual-tone dashboard along with a free-standing 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets a digital driver display. Other features include wireless charging, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and an electric sunroof. It remains unclear whether the India-spec Swift will also get an ADAS package.

Conclusion

Prices for the current-gen Swift start at Rs 5.99 lakh and go up to Rs 9.03 lakh. The 4th-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift will demand a slight premium over the outgoing model. Upon launch, the new Swift will rival the likes of Tata Tiago and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. Certain reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki is also working on an electric version of the Swift.
