Maruti Suzuki has revealed that its mass market hatchback, Wagon R, has crossed the 10 million global sales landmark. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is sold in over 75 countries, with India being its biggest market. As of June 2025, the automaker had sold 3.4 million units of the hatchback in India. The Wagon R was launched in India back in December 1999. Its 3rd-generation model was introduced in January 2019. This model accounts for 1.1 million sales.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is sold in over 75 markets across regions like Europe, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and more. It is manufactured in Japan, India, Hungary, and other countries. Depending on the region, the hatchback is tweaked cosmetically as well as mechanically to meet the local demands. In India, the CNG powertrain of the Wagon R is highly powerful, while in Japan, the Wagon R Smile with sliding doors has a niche audience. The hatchback was first launched in Japan back in September 1993. It made its way to India in December 1999.

Last year, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R completed 25 years in India. It is one of the most popular Maruti Suzuki offerings in the country, having sold over 3.41 million units (3,414,176 as of June 2025). The 3rd-gen model of the hatchback has sold 40,292 units in FY2026 (April to June) alone. India is also one of the biggest export hubs for the Wagon R, with a good chunk of the manufactured units shipped to foreign markets.
The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is offered in 3 powertrain options in India. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is only available on the ZXi Plus variants, producing a maximum power output of 88hp and 113Nm of torque. The 1.0-litre petrol engine on the lower engine puts out 66hp and 89Nm. In a CNG guide, this engine produces 56hp and 82Nm. The non-CNG models are now E20-compliant. This means that the hatchback can run on E20 fuel – 20% ethanol and 80% petrol.

The Indian version of the Wagon R was updated to offer 6 airbags as a standard feature back in April 2025. Its prices start at Rs 5.79 lakh and go up to Rs 7.50 lakh. The hatchback rivals the Renault Kwid, Maruti Swift, Maruti Celerio, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, and Tata Tiago in India.
