Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Over 1 lakh exports for the big lifestyle SUV
Maruti Suzuki started exporting the Jimny 5-door from India in October 2023. The lifestyle SUV is shipped to markets in Mexico, Chile, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and the Middle East. In Australia, it goes by the name of Jimny XL. In Suzuki’s home territory, Japan, it is rebadged as Jimny Nomade. Launched earlier this year in Japan, the Jimny Nomade garnered 50,000 orders within the first few days of its introduction.
The engine specs of the international variants of the Jimny are identical to its Indian counterpart. The SUV is powered by the 1.5-litre K15B four-cylinder petrol engine. This engine produces a maximum power output of 102hp and 130Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. It is equipped with Suzuki’s All Grip Pro AWD with low-range transfer gear (4L mode). The Jimny offers a mileage of 16.94 kmpl on the manual variants and 16.39 kmpl on the automatic variants.
Talking about the features, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is packed with a 9.0-inch touchscreen Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. There is a 4-speaker audio system on board. On the safety front, it rocks 6 airbags, Brake Limited Slip Differential, ESP with hill hold assist, rearview camera, hill descent control, and ABS with EBD.
The Jimny XL, sold exclusively in Australia, also features an ADAS package with features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, anti-collision warning, dual camera brake support, lane departure warning, weaving alert, rear parking sensors, and more. The Jimny Nomade, currently on sale in Japan, is expected to get an ADAS package next year. The India-spec version of the SUV does not have this feature yet.

Final Thoughts
Despite its success in global markets, Jimny’s reception in India has been lukewarm. Maruti Suzuki will look towards updating the lifestyle SUV with features like ADAS to boost its domestic sales. A hybrid engine for India could also be in the works. Its biggest domestic rivals are the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
