Maruti Suzuki Jimny will not get a 2WD variant

Maruti Suzuki Jimny is set to launch on June 7 in India. The lifestyle SUV will lock horns with Mahindra Thar, which has been dominating this segment in India so far. But unlike the Thar, Maruti Suzuki Jimny will not come with an entry-level 2WD variant. The Jimny will receive Suzuki’s All Grip Pro AWD with low-range transfer gear (4L mode).

Maruti Suzuki Jimny: Committed to off-roading

While a 2WD variant allows Mahindra to price the Thar affordably, Suzuki believes that a similar configuration will stray from its off-roading roots. First launched in 1970 in Japan, the Jimny monicker is associated with off-roading. Powering this lifestyle SUV is the K15B petrol engine that can produce a maximum power output of 102hp and 130Nm of torque. Buyers will get to choose between 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny stands at dimensions of 3850mm x 1645mm x 1730mm with a wheelbase of 2,550 mm and a wheelbase of 2,250 mm. It doesn’t stray too far from its 3-door predecessor in terms of design. The new Jimny will get two additional doors and a quarter window at the back. The circular headlamps, vertical slat grille, flared wheel arches, and off-road tyres have been carried forward from the 3-door Jimny.

In terms of features, Maruti Suzuki Jimny gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, an Arkamys surround sound system, 6 airbags, Brake Limited Slip Differential, ESP with hill hold assist, a rearview camera, hill descent control, and ABS with EBD.

Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki Jimny was unveiled in India at Auto Expo earlier this year. It amassed 15,000 bookings within its first week of debut. So far, Maruti has received 30,000 bookings for the Jimny. There are two variants on offer – Zeta and Alpha. Maruti will prioritise the deliveries of the Alpha variant due to the high demand. In India, Maruti Suzuki Jimny rivals other lifestyle SUVs like Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha.
