Mahindra Thar 5-door spied on again, looks production-ready

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is one of the most awaited SUVs of 2024. Initially spotted testing in 2022, it was expected that Mahindra would launch the 5-door lifestyle SUV this year. However, that was not the case as the automaker thwarted any hopes of a 2023 release when it confirmed back in August that the 5-door Thar is scheduled for a launch next year. New spy shots of the lifestyle SUV have now emerged, revealing some interesting design tweaks.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: New spy shots reveal design changes

The new 5-door variant of the Mahindra Thar will get some design tweaks that will differentiate it from its 3-door counterpart. The front grille now gets 5 vertical slats and a horizontal bar in the middle. The new grille looks inspired by the SUV offerings from Jeep. The LED projector headlamps and DRLs also get a new design on the 5-door Thar. The fog lamps also get LEDs. The housing positions of the headlamps and DRLs remain the same.

In terms of features, the Mahindra Thar 5-door will get a new, larger touchscreen infotainment system. While the current Thar 3-door has a 7-inch display unit, the 5-door variant will come with a 10-inch or larger infotainment system. The latter will also get a dashcam as a part of its instrument setup. It remains to be seen whether it will offered as standard across all variants. New features aside, the biggest change inside the Mahindra Thar 5-door is the addition of a third seating row. Buyers may get the option to choose between 6-person and 7-person seating options.

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be made available in 2 engine options – a 2.2-litre diesel and a 2.0-litre petrol engine. It will also come in a 2WD configuration like its 3-door counterpart. However, it won’t get the 1.5-litre diesel engine found in the entry-level variants of the 3-door Thar. The option of an automatic transmission will be reserved solely for 4×4 variants.

Conclusion

Mahindra has confirmed that the 5-door Thar will be launched in India next year. It will rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door and Force Gurkha 5-door. The automaker showcased an electric Thar concept at its Independence Day event back in August. However, it hasn’t been confirmed whether the Thar EV will ever go into production.
