The 5-door variant for the Mahindra Thar has been in the works for quite some time now. The lifestyle SUV was tested in its 5-door avatar several times last year. The wait seems to be close to over as Mahindra is currently carrying out the final stages of testing for the 5-door Thar. Mahindra recently added a new 2WD variant to the Thar lineup, effectively bringing its starting price under Rs 10 lakh.

The 5-door Mahindra Thar will be offered in two powertrain options: 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engine. The 5-door Thar is also set to come in a 2WD avatar like its 3-door sibling. However, it won’t get the 1.5-litre diesel engine found in the entry-level variants of the 3-door Thar. The option of an automatic transmission will be reserved solely for 4×4 variants.
Mahindra Thar 5-door will be underpinned by Scorpio N’s platform, making it dimensionally bigger than the 3-door Thar. Since the 5-door isn’t under 4 metres in length, it will not qualify for additional tax benefits. The 2WD variants will be competitively priced, nonetheless. The 3-door Thar stands at a length of 3,985mm with a wheelbase of 2,450mm.
Being a larger vehicle, the 5-door Thar will offer a greater cabin space. Mahindra may offer the new Thar with a third seating row. It could be made available in 6-seat and 7-seat options. The dashboard design and equipment list of the 5-door Mahindra Thar will also be carried forward from its 3-door sibling, but Mahindra may add new drive modes that we previously saw on the Scorpio N.

While no details about the pricing are known yet, Mahindra could price the 5-door Thar up to Rs 3 lakh more than the 3-door variant. Sources claim that Mahindra will debut the lifestyle SUV during the Diwali season with an official launch taking place later in the year. Upon launch, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will rival the new 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
