Toyota Kirloskar Motor has revealed a flex-fuel prototype for their newest MPV, Toyota Innova HyCross. Toyota claims it is the world’s first BS6 (Stage II) electrified flex fuel vehicle. Innova’s flex fuel powertrain could make it to production in the coming months.

Toyota Innova HyCross Flex Fluel Hybrid: Everything you need to know

The Toyota Innova HyCross Flex Fuel prototype can run on a 20% petrol and ethanol blend. The prototype is BS6 Stage-II compliant. The ethanol-blended petrol helps in reducing carbon emissions from the vehicle. The prototype retains the engine found on the regular HyCross. It gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces a maximum power output of 152hp and 187Nm torque. This engine is paired with fifth-gen strong hybrid tech (M20A FXS) and can produce a combined power of 186hp.

Being an Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle, this Toyota Innova HyCross prototype can run in electric mode 60% of the time, completely shutting off the petrol engine. The use of an electric powertrain in combination with a flex-fuel engine also improves the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. The prototype gets different spark plugs, valves, and piston ring tops. These components are water-resistant and corrosion-proof.

Unveiling the prototype of the World’s First BS 6 (Stage II), Shri. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, stated, “Ethanol being an indigenous, clean & renewable fuel holds a promising future for India. The Government’s focus on ethanol is for achieving energy self-reliance, spurring the incomes for farmers and having a better impact on the environment. The Government’s plan is not only to diversify agriculture surpluses towards the energy sector but also generate wealth from waste using 2G technology for producing ethanol from bio-waste. A lot of emphasis is being laid on building and expanding the necessary infrastructure to produce ethanol in the whole country.

It is indeed commendable to see that Toyota is making strong efforts for transiting to cleaner energy options and for environment conservation with its multiple advanced technological capabilities like Hydrogen Vehicle, Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle and more. Today, we unveiled the Prototype of the World’s First BS 6 (Stage II), Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle of Toyota, aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’.”
