5-door Mahindra Thar to be unveiled on August 15 in South Africa

The 5-door Mahindra Thar is set to make its global debut in the coming months. After revealing its ‘Born Electric’ line of SUVs on Independence Day last year, Mahindra will unveil the 5-door Thar on August 15 this year. The unveiling will take place in South Africa. The lifestyle SUV will go on sale in India next year.

5-door Mahindra Thar: Everything we know so far

Mahindra Thar is the most successful lifestyle SUV in India. The 5-door version of the Thar has been spotted testing on multiple occasions since August 2022. The SUV was rumoured to be in its final testing stage back in February. With the launch of the 5-door Jimny, Thar faces some stiff competition in its segment in India.

Talking about the powertrain, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be made available in 2 engine options: 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engine. The 5-door Thar is also set to come in a 2WD avatar like its 3-door sibling. However, it won’t get the 1.5-litre diesel engine found in the entry-level variants of the 3-door Thar. The option of an automatic transmission will be reserved solely for 4×4 variants.

The 5-door Thar will be underpinned by Scorpio N’s platform. The SUV will be longer than its 3-door sibling and also the 5-door Jimny. Since its length will exceed 4 metres, it will not qualify for additional tax benefits. In comparison, the 3-door Thar stands at a length of 3,985mm with a wheelbase of 2,450mm.

Mahindra will not change the design of the 5-door Thar. The only changes will come in the form of two additional rear doors and a larger platform. Inside, the 5-door Thar may get a third seating row. Buyers may get 6-seat and 7-seat options. The instrumentation is also expected to be carried forward from the 3-door Thar. It is rumoured that the 5-door SUV will get new drive modes from Scorpio N.

As mentioned earlier, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be launched in India in 2024. Bookings for the lifestyle SUV will commence soon after its global debut. Upon launch, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will rival Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
