A sport utility vehicle or SUV combines the elements of normal day to day cars with features from off-road vehicles, such as raised ground clearance and four-wheel drive. 

With the rise in the SUV market in India, companies are rushing to release their version of the car. There is a car for everyone in each segment. Is your budget under 50 lakhs? Here are some great SUVs you can consider buying. 

Toyota Fortuner

One of the best-selling SUVs in India, The new updated model of Fortuner is now priced from Rs 30.73 lakh to Rs 42.33 lakh ex-showroom, India. The SUV is powered by a big 2.7-litre unit which the company offers in turbo variant as well. The lower tuned variant produces 166PS of max power and 245 Nm peak torque. While the more powerful turbo variant generates 204PS of power and 500 Nm of torque. Toyota offers Fortuner in both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive trails coupled with a 6-speed manual or automatic for transmission. 

Other features include new LED headlamps, a new bumper design, an LED head and tail light, a larger touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The ledger being its top variant include some extra features like a 360-degree parking camera, wireless charging pad, ambient lighting and a kick-to-open feature for the powered tailgate. For security company made no compromise by introducing seven airbags, vehicle stability control, hill assist, and ABS with EBD 

  • Mercedes-Benz GLA

Mercedes Benz GLA

A 5 seater luxury offering by Mercedes-Benz. The car retails between  Rs 42.10 lakh to Rs 57.30 lakh ex-showroom. Some standard features that the GLA offers are connected car tech, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, 64-colour ambient lighting, a 10.25-inch touchscreen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and dual-zone climate control. Mercedes-Benz offers this car in 3 Engine option a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid for improved fuel economy. 

For increasing fuel economy the company made no compromise with power being 165PS/250 Nm. The other option is a 2.0-litre diesel variant producing 192PS of max power and 4000Nm peak torque. The last and top of the line most powerful variant is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit producing massive 306PS of power and 400 Nm of peak torque. There is no manual variant for any of the cars and all the variants except the GLA 200 has the all-wheel-drive option. 

  • BMW X1

BMW X1

Entry-level SUV by BMW is offered in 5 seater variant with two engine options. The first one is a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 192PS of power and 280 Nm of torque. The same is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. On the other hand, the second option is an 8-speed automatic transmission that is paired with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The diesel variant produces 190PS of maximum power and 400 Nm of torque. 

Taking about the features as standard the SUV gets a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, power-adjustable front seats, ambient lighting, and a reclinable rear seat. Adding to this is dual-zone climate control, a parking camera, power-adjustable front seats, a 5.7-inch driver’s display showing information about the car, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay. BMW never compromises with safety and X1 is no different as the company offers six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), electronic parking brake, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. The price of the car range between Rs 38.50 lakh to Rs 42.60 lakh ex-showroom, India

  • MG Gloster

MG Gloster

MG entered the Indian market not long ago and has been selling some top of the line SUVs. Gloster by MG is a full-fledged 7 seater SUV that is priced between Rs 29.98 lakh and Rs 37.28 lakh ex-showroom, India. The car is available in two diesel engine options. The first one is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel which is available in only the rear-wheel option. The engine produces 163PS of power and 375 Nm of torque. The other engine option is the same 2.0-litre diesel but with a dual-turbo to give power to all four wheels. This variant produces 218PS of maximum power and torque of 480 Nm. Both the engines are mated with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

MG makes one of the most feature-rich cars in India. Gloster has a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For comfort for everyone, MG offers three-zone climate control with a PM 2.5 filter, panoramic sunroof, and a 12-way adjustable driver seat with a memory function. Adaptive cruise control is included for safety with features like semi-parallel park assist, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. 

  • Volvo XC40

Volvo XC40

Volvo makes one of the safest cars around the world, thanks to them seat belts were invented. The XC40 gets Level 2 autonomous driving with lane keep aid and radar-based cruise control. Other safety features on offer include hill start assist, hill descent control and park pilot assist. For the engine, the company uses a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder unit that produces 190PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. Power is reached to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Features of the car include a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the output comes from a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The Suv is also equipped with dual-zone climate control with rear AC vents, front and rear heated seats, an 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and a panoramic sunroof. The base-spec version of the car starts from Rs 39.9 lakh, while the top variant starts from Rs 43.9 lakh. Both the prices are ex-showroom, India.

  • Audi Q2

Audi Q2

Just like X1, the Q2 is the base SUV unit offered by the company. Audi Q2 shared the same engine from VW Tiguan Allspace i.e 2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The same produces 190PS of max power and 320 Nm of peak torque. The car is an all-wheel-drive paired with 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch automatic). The SUV is a 5 seater variant and the price tag starts from  Rs 34.99 lakh ex-showroom and goes all the way up to Rs 48.89 lakh ex-showroom, India.

Features in the car include ambient lighting, cruise control, digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, and keyless entry as standard. The car also got an update for a new infotainment system with the support of Apple Carplay and Android Auto. For safety features, Audi included 6 airbags,  front and rear parking sensors, and ESC (electronic stability control).

  • Mini Cooper Countryman

Mini Cooper Countryman

Countryman is available in two variants: Cooper S and Cooper S JCW Inspired and the price tag by the Mini is kept starting from Rs 39.50 lakh ex-showroom and goes all the way up to Rs 43.40 lakh ex-showroom India. The 5 seater configuration SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produces 192PS of power and 280 Nm of torque. Mini offers 2 drive modes with the car: Sports and Green. In sports mode, the car can do 0-100 in just 7.5 seconds. Transmission duties on offer is a 7-speed dual-clutch powering the rear wheels. 

Mini Cooper Countryman is equipped with some exotic features like the heads-up display, powered tailgate, powered front seats with memory function and a wireless phone charger. Other standard features include an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, dual-zone climate control and a panoramic glass roof. For safety Countryman is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with cornering brake control, brake assist, and crash sensor as standard.
