Volkswagen Virtus completes 3 years in India

Volkswagen Virtus has completed 3 years in India. The midsize sedan was launched in June 2023 at a starting price of Rs 11.22 lakh. It was the second release of the Volkswagen 2.0 project for India, following the Taigun SUV. The Virtus is one of the most popular sedans in the country, commanding a 32% market share (YTD 25) in its segment. Volkswagen manufactures the Virtus in India and exports it to foreign markets.

Volkswagen Virtus: The story so far

In the 3 years since its launch, Volkswagen Virtus has garnered 61,563 sales in India. On top of that, 81,243 units of the sedan have been exported to foreign markets, bringing the total number of sales to 142,806 units. These figures take into account Virtus’ sales till the end of April 2025.

In FY2023, Volkswagen Virtus sold 17,432 units in India. This was followed by a steady growth in sales, as the sedan sold 21,094 units in FY2024. The sales continued to grow in FY2025, with Volkswagen retailing 21,432 units of the Virtus in India. In FY2026, it has garnered 1,605 sales so far. Volkswagen Virtus was India’s best-selling sedan in 2024.

This milestone is a true testament to the trust our customers place in the Virtus and the Volkswagen brand. Volkswagen Virtus is underpinned by the modular MQB A0 IN platform and comes in 2 powertrain options. The 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 113hp and 175Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine puts out 148hp and 250Nm. This engine can be linked to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT gearbox.

Final Thoughts

Currently, the Volkswagen Virtus is priced between Rs 11.56 lakh and Rs 19.40 lakh. It is due for a facelift soon. We expect Volkswagen to launch an updated version of the sedan by the end of the year. The Virtus faces primary competition from other midsize sedans like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Skoda Slavia.
