Tata Punch EV: Everything you need to know

The design of the new Tata Punch EV closely resembles that of the new Nexon.ev. The EV looks very different from its ICE counterpart, something we don’t get to see often with Tata’s electric offerings. The front fascia of the compact Punch.ev is marked by a shut-off grille with an LED light bar running across the bonnet. The split headlamp cluster has edgy housings, similar to the new Nexon.ev and the facelifted ICE models of the Safari and Harrier. Tata Punch EV is also the first Tata EV offering to have its charging socket at the front.

The profile of the electric SUV looks similar to its ICE counterpart. The Punch.ev rests on 16-inch alloys and gets disc brakes for all four wheels. In comparison, only the front wheels of the ICE Punch get disc brakes. At the back, the electric compact SUV features Y-shaped tail lamps and a dual-tone bumper.

As mentioned earlier, the Tata Punch EV is underpinned by the automaker’s new ‘acti.ev’ platform architecture. It is an acronym for Advanced Connected Tech-Intelligent Electric Vehicle. The electric SUV will get two battery variants – Standard (25kWh) and Long Range (35kWh). The Standard variant gets a 3.3kW AC charger while the Long Range variant gets a 7.2kW AC charger. Both variants also support DC fast charging up to 150kW. The EV’s driving range will be between 300 – 600km, depending on the variant. More details are expected later.

Inside, the Tata Punch EV gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with another 10.25-inch screen for the digital instrument cluster. It also gets a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo. This steering wheel design is also found on the new Nexon, Safari, and Harrier facelifts. Other features include a 360-degree camera, wireless charger, electronic parking brake, ventilated front seats, cruise control, and more. The acti.ev platform also supports Level 2 ADAS capabilities, although the Punch EV will not get that package.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr Anand Kulkarni, Chief Products Officer, Head of HV Programs and Customer Service, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “As leaders of the EV evolution in India, we are proud to enter 2024 with a groundbreaking development in the form of acti.ev – a made-in-India advanced Pure EV architecture that promises to be a trendsetter in the country’s rapidly developing EV market. This architecture has been meticulously designed to enable class-leading efficiencies, maximizing space, battery capacity and enhancing the overall driving experience. acti.ev is a global ready, future-facing pure electric architecture that enables the implementation of software oriented features, ensuring that our vehicles are not only technologically advanced but also future-proof.”

“With this, we are doubly excited to announce the unveiling of the first product made on this advanced, multi-layered architecture – the Punch.ev. The Punch.ev is our introduction to the next generation of EVs from TPEM. As has been the case with our current portfolio of EV products, we are confident that future products made on the acti.ev architecture will continue to spark delight in our ever-growing community.”

Conclusion

The Tata Punch EV will be offered in five trims – Smart, Smart+, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+. Only the last three trims will be available for the Long Range battery variant. Prices for the electric SUV are expected to start at Rs 10 lakh and could go as high as Rs 14 lakh for the top-spec variant. Upon launch, the Tata Punch EV will directly rival Citroen eC3.
