Tata Punch breezes past the 5 lakh sales milestone

Tata Motors has crossed a new milestone with the Punch SUV garnering over 5 lakh sales in India. Tata Punch was launched in India in October 2021. It took the compact SUV a little over 3 years to accomplish this feat. Tata has sold over 1,40,000 units of the SUV so far into FY2025. The Punch was also the highest-selling car in India last year, outselling the likes of Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Swift, and Hyundai Creta.

Tata Punch: Dominating the compact SUV segment

Tata Punch’s sales have been on an upward trajectory ever since its launch. After launching in October 2021, Tata sold 52,716 units of the SUV in FY2022. This was followed by 1,33,819 sales in FY2023 and 1,68,844 in FY2024. The 1,48,068 units sold so far in FY2025, take the cumulative number past the 5 lakh mark.

Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated, 3-cylinder engine with Dynapro technology that is capable of producing a maximum power output of 85hp and 113Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or 5-speed AMT. The SUV can go from 0-60 kph in a claimed 6.5 seconds and 0-100 kph in a claimed 16.5 seconds. In a CNG configuration, the 1.2-litre engine produces a maximum power output of 77hp and 97Nm of torque.

The all-electric version of Tata Punch is available in two variants – Standard (25kWh battery, 315km range) and Long Range (35kWh battery, 421km range). The Long Range variants of the electric SUV produce a maximum power output of 122hp and 190Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the Standard variant puts out 82hp and 114Nm. The former can go from 0-100kmph in 9.5 seconds with the top speed capped at 140kmph. The latter can accomplish the same feat in 13.5 seconds.

Conclusion

A facelifted version of Tata Punch is currently in the works. It is expected to launch later this year and will be identical to its all-electric sibling. Tata will upgrade the features and interior layout of the SUV but it will remain the same under the hood. Prices for the current-gen version of Punch start at Rs 6.20 lakh, following a price hike earlier this month. The top-spec variant of the SUV fetches Rs 10.32 lakh. The Punch EV is priced between Rs 9.99 lakh – Rs 14.29 lakh. The compact SUV rivals the Hyundai Exter, Nissan Magnite, Citroen C3, Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Skoda Kylaq, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza in India.
