Hyundai Inster awarded 4 stars by Euro NCAP

The Hyundai Inster ‘micro SUV’ has been awarded a 4-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. It was put through a series of crash tests to measure the safety offered to the driver and passenger. The electric SUV made its debut globally in June 2024. It remains to be seen whether Hyundai will bring the Inster to India.

Hyundai Inster: Euro NCAP crash test results explained

Hyundai Inster scored 28.3 points in the Adult Occupant Protection test, securing a 70% safety rating. In a frontal collision, the SUV provided adequate protection to the driver’s head and feet, marginal protection to the chest and legs, and good protection to the pelvis. Meanwhile, the protection offered to the passenger’s head and thighs was good. The chest and legs showed adequate protection. A side pole collision showed good protection to the driver’s head and pelvis, and marginal protection to the chest. Meanwhile, after a side mobile barrier collision, the head and chest showed good protection.

For the Child Occupant Protection test, the restraint system was put into action for 6 and 10-year-old test dummies. The SUV scored 40.1 points, securing an 81% rating. Upon frontal impact, the protection was good for all critical areas of both child dummies. However, upon lateral impact, the chest of the 10-year-old child dummy showed poor protection. Finally, in the Vulnerable Road Users test, the SUV scored 44.2 points, securing a 70% rating. The protection offered to the head of a struck pedestrian/cyclist was largely good or adequate. However, the windscreen pillars, top, and base failed to offer even marginal protection.

Hyundai Inster is available in two battery and engine options. Entry-level trims are powered by a front-axle-mounted electric motor that can produce a maximum power output of 96hp and 147Nm of torque. This engine can accelerate the EV from 0-100 kmph in 11.7 seconds while attaining a top speed of 140kmph. The 42kWh battery pack on the entry-level variants offers a driving range of 300km.

The top-spec variants of the Hyundai Inster can produce a maximum power output of 113hp and 147Nm of torque. They can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 10.6 seconds with their top speed capped at 150kmph. The 49kWh battery pack on these variants offers a driving range of 350km. Both battery packs support 120kW DC charging. The EV comes with an 11kW onboard charger.

Final Thoughts

It remains to be seen whether Hyundai will bring the Inster to India. A 2025 release is likely not on the cards. If it is launched in India, it will rival the Kia Syros EV, Tata Punch EV, MG Comet EV, and Tata Curvv EV.
