BYD Seal EV: Here’s what you can expect

The upcoming BYD Seal EV takes design inspiration from the automaker’s Ocean X concept which was introduced in 2021. Like BYD Dolphin, the electric sedan follows the ocean-themed nomenclature as well. It stands at dimensions of 4,800mm x 1,875mm x 1,460mm and has a wheelbase of 2,920mm. It is visibly longer and taller than its global rival, Model 3.

The front fascia of the EV is marked by split LED headlamps and boomerang-shaped LED DRLs. A light bar at the back connects the tail lamps, spanning the width of the sedan. In profile, the Seal has a coupe-like sloping roofline. The boot space capacity of the electric sedan is 400 litres while the frunk can hold an additional 53 litres of cargo.

Inside, the BYD Seal gets a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display inside. Also present is a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The driver’s cockpit is also equipped with a Head-Up Display. The AC vents are positioned around the infotainment unit. The drive modes can be adjusted using the scroll wheel on the centre console. It also houses two wireless charging pads and additional controls.

The India-spec BYD Seal will be equipped with an 82.5kWh battery pack. This is the larger of the two battery packs that are offered on the Seal overseas. According to BYD, it can power the electric sedan for 700km, although the real-world numbers are much lower. The 61.4kWh battery pack, which didn’t make it to India, offers a claimed driving range of 550km. The PMS motor powering the sedan can produce a maximum power output of 230hp and 360Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 5.9 seconds.

Conclusion

The BYD Seal will be imported to India as a CBU unit and is expected to cost Rs 50 lakh. It will join the Atto 3 SUV and the e6 MPV in BYD’s India portfolio. More details about the electric sedan will be revealed as we get closer to launch. Upon launch, it will rival the likes of Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
