Tata Sierra secures a 5-star safety rating from BNCAP

Bharat NCAP has awarded the Tata Sierra a 5-star safety rating after putting the SUV through multiple rounds of crash tests. This rating is valid for all variants of the SUV. The Sierra was launched in November 2025 at a starting price of Rs 11.49 lakh. It comes in 7 trim levels and 3 powertrains.

Tata Sierra: Bharat NCAP crash test results explained

In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) test, Tata Sierra scored 31.14 points out of a possible 32. This score comprises 15.14 (out of 16) points from the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier test and 16 points (out of 16) from the Side Movable Deformable Barrier Test. Upon frontal impact, the test dummy for the driver showed good protection along the head, neck, thighs, and feet. The chest and legs were adequately protected. The passenger’s dummy showed good protection throughout. On side impact, all parts of the dummy showed good protection.

In the Child Occupant Protection (COP) test, the Sierra scored 44.73 points out of a possible 49. The SUV racked up a Dynamic score of 23.73 points (out of 24), CRS installation score of 12 points (out of 12), and Vehicle assessment score of 9 points (out of 13).

The Tata Sierra comes with 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and 20 safety features as standard. Other premium safety features include Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, rear occupant sensor, perimetric alarm sensor, a 360-degree Surround View System, and a Level 2 ADAS package. This ADAS package consists of 22 features, including Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist.

Buyers can choose from 3 engine options while buying the Tata Sierra. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 105hp and 145Nm of torque. It can be mated to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, TGDI petrol engine puts out 158hp and 255Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Lastly, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel engine generates a maximum power output of 116hp. With a 6-speed manual transmission, it produces 260Nm torque. This output increases to 280Nm when the engine is linked to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Final Thoughts

Since its launch, Tata Sierra has been in extremely high demand. The SUV has already crossed 1 lakh bookings, and is currently demanding a 4-month waiting period from buyers. It rivals the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Grand VitaraHyundai CretaToyota Urban Cruiser HyRyderKia SeltosSkoda Kushaq, and MG Hector in India.
