BYD Atto 2 spotted testing in Tamil Nadu

The upcoming BYD Atto 2 has been spotted on a road test in Tamil Nadu. The midsize SUV is expected to launch in India by the end of the year. The international-spec version of the Atto 2 comes in 2 powertrain options – all-electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Currently, BYD’s catalogue in India comprises entirely of EVs – Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and eMax 7.

BYD Atto 2: What do the spy shots suggest?

The BYD Atto 2 test mule spotted in Tamil Nadu was draped in camouflage. The cutouts on its front fascia revealed sleek LED headlamps integrated with DRLs. The headlamps were connected by a gloss black trim with the BYD lettering. The side view revealed a petal-style design for the alloy wheels and black cladding on the skirt and wheel arches. The door handles were mounted in their conventional positions. The spy shots did not reveal the rear section of the SUV, but if it follows the design language of its international-spec variant, it will get a sleek light bar running through the tailgate, connecting the two tail lamps.

The interior of the BYD Atto 2 remains a mystery so far. The international-spec model is available in 2 interior colour themes – all-black and beige-and-black. The dashboard has a clean look and flaunts a free-standing 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment system. Accompanying this screen is an 8.8-inch digital driver’s display. The 3-spoke steering wheel has physical controls. There’s wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity on board. Other features include six-way adjustable front seats, a panoramic glass roof, 60W and 18W Type-C charging, 50W wireless charging, Vehicle-to-Load charging (V2L), voice commands, a 6-speaker audio system, a 360-degree camera, and more.

The ADAS suite on the Atto 2 comprises functions like Driver Monitoring System (DMS), Adaptive and Intelligent Cruise Control (ACC/ICC), Intelligent Speed Limit Information and Control, Lane Keep Assistant, Lane Change Assist (LCA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Door Opening Warning (DOW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Traction Control System (TCS), Forward and Rear Collision Warning (FCW, RCW) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) with Rear Cross Traffic Brake (RTCB).

As mentioned earlier, the Atto 2 is offered in 2 powertrain options globally. The EV comes in 2 battery pack sizes – 45.1kWh and 64.8kWh. The former offers a driving range of 312km, while the latter can go up to 430km on a full charge. The electric SUV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor which produces a maximum power output of 201hp and 310Nm of torque on the 64.8kWh battery variants. The smaller battery variants put out 174hp and 290Nm.

The PHEV model, dubbed Atto 2 DM-i, is powered by a combination of a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine and a front-mounted electric motor. This system generates a combined power output of 212hp and 300Nm of torque. There are 2 battery sizes on offer – 7.8kWh and 18kWh.

Final Thoughts

It remains to be seen whether BYD will launch the PHEV version of the Atto 2 in India. It showcased its plug-in hybrid tech on the Seal U earlier this year. Upon launch, the Atto 2 will rival the Mahindra BE 6, Tata Sierra EV, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, and Hyundai Creta Electric.
