2027 BMW X5 breaks cover, 5 powertrains unveiled

The 5th-generation BMW X5 has made its global debut. The SUV will go on sale next year. It will come in 5 powertrain options – ICE (petrol and diesel), mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), all-electric, and hydrogen. This is the first time that the X5 will be made available in an all-electric avatar. Furthermore, it will become the first BMW offering to get a hydrogen powertrain.

5th-gen BMW X5: What’s on offer?

The new X5 gets significant cosmetic upgrades. It follows BMW’s Neue Klasse design language. The front fascia has an upright design and features the ‘Iconic Glow’ kidney grille. Flanking this grille on either side are the new ‘double-X’ light icons making their first appearance on a BMW vehicle. Along the sides, the SUV gets new door handles, dubbed ‘BMW Winglets’. They are electrically operable and are mounted on the B and C pillars. Buyers can choose between multiple alloy wheel sizes ranging from 21 to 23 inches. At the back, the bumper and LED tail lamps have been reworked.

The cabin and dashboard of the new BMW X5 have been completely overhauled. The SUV flaunts the BWM Panoramic iDrive display at the base of its windscreen. It indicates all the key information related to the vehicle. The dashboard houses a massive 17.9-inch central touchscreen infotainment system. The driver’s cockpit gets a 3D Heads-Up Display (HUD). Buyers can also opt for a passenger display. Other features include ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, ventilation and massage functions for the front seats, a B&W sound system with Dolby Atmos, automatic doors with a soft-close function, wireless charging, a Level 2 ADAS suite and more.

As mentioned earlier, the BMW X5 comes in 5 powertrain options. The X5 40 xDrive is powered by a 3-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine linked to a 48V mild-hybrid setup. It generates a maximum power output of 400hp and 580Nm. Meanwhile, the X5 40d xDrive, powered by the 3-litre, six-cylinder diesel engine with a mild-hybrid setup, puts out 313hp and 670Nm.

The X5 50e xDrive and X5 60e xDrive are the PHEV powertrain options. The former generates a maximum power output of 489hp and 700Nm of torque, while the latter puts out 612hp and 800Nm. The two models have an electric-only driving range of 102km. They support 11kW AC charging.

The all-electric BMW iX5 is based on an 800V architecture. It is powered by dual electric motors. The EV generates a maximum power output of 578hp and 805Nm. Its 141kWh battery pack can go up to 845km on a single charge. Using a 460kW DC fast charger, this battery pack can be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 23 minutes. The EV also supports 22W AC charging. Lastly, the iX5 Hydrogen will put out 401hp, but it will join the rest of the lineup later down the line.

Final Thoughts

The 5th-gen BMW X5 will go into production at the automaker’s plant in Spartanburg (USA) in August 2026. The ICE variants of the SUV will launch in late November 2026. The EV and PHEV powertrains will hit the market in early 2027. The iX5 Hydrogen will be the last to join the lineup.
