Kia Syros EV spotted at a charging station

Kia India is planning to launch an all-electric version of the Syros SUV next year. A test mule of the Kia Syros EV was recently spotted at a charging station in Kochi. The EV was completely wrapped in black drapes. The ICE version of the Syros SUV was launched in India on February 1. It garnered over 20,000 bookings within 2 months of launch.

Kia Syros EV: What to expect?

The Kia Syros EV will be cosmetically identical to its ICE sibling. The profile and dimensions of the camouflaged test mule look identical to the ICE model. Its undisguised parts (pillars, roof rails, and OVRMs) remain unchanged, too. The LED headlamp and DRL design, while under the covers, is also expected to remain unchanged. The all-electric Syros will get EV-specific cosmetic tweaks like a shut-off grille, a cutout for the charging port, and exclusive badging.

No changes are expected inside the Kia Syros EV either. Its ICE sibling rocks twin 12.3-inch displays for the touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster, a 5-inch climate control system, an 8-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, a 4-way powered front seat, seat ventilation, reclining and sliding second-row seats, 64-colour ambient mood lighting, wireless charging, and more.

Safety features on the SUV include 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Vehicle Stability Management, an Electric Parking Brake with Auto Hold, a 360-degree camera, and more. The Level 2 ADAS package offered with the SUV consists of features like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, 360 Degree Camera with Blind View Monitor and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go.

The Kia Syros EV could borrow its battery packs from the Hyundai Inster. Hyundai’s compact EV comes in 42kWh and 49kWh battery pack options. The smaller unit offers a 300km driving range on a full charge, while the latter can go up to 370km. The entry-level trims of the Inster are powered by a single electric motor mounted on the front axle. This motor generates a maximum power output of 96hp and 147Nm of torque. The higher variants can pump out 113hp and 147Nm.

The ICE version Kia Syros is available in 2 powertrain options.  The 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine generates a maximum power output of 120hp and 172Nm of torque. It can be linked to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Meanwhile, the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces a maximum power output of 115hp and 250Nm of torque. This engine also gets 2 transmission options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter gearbox.

Final Thoughts

Prices for the ICE Kia Syros start at Rs 9.50 lakh and go up to Rs 17.80 lakh. We expect its all-electric range to start at Rs 13.50 lakh. Upon launch, the Kia Syros EV will rival the Tata Nexon EVTata Punch EV, and Mahindra XUV400 EV.
