Hyundai Tucson discontinued in India

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has taken the Tucson SUV off the Indian market. The Hyundai Tucson was launched in India back in August 2022 at a starting price of Rs 27.70 lakh. It served as the automaker’s ‘big’ SUV offering in India. The primary reason for its discontinuation is reported to be the lack of demand. The SUV can no longer be found on Hyundai India’s website.

Hyundai Tucson: New facelift model not expected to launch in India

The Tucson was Hyundai’s flagship ICE SUV in India. It sat on top of the midsize Creta and its larger sibling, Alcazar, in Hyundai’s portfolio. The premium SUV was imported to India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. Its assembly process took place at the automaker’s facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

With the midsize SUV segment taking off in India in the late 2010s, the premium, full-size SUV market shrank in size. Tucson’s sales quickly dwindled after launch, as it sold 3,692 units in 2023 and 1,543 units in 2025. This year, the SUV managed a meagre 650 sales before Hyundai decided to pull the plug on it. Its facelifted model, unveiled globally in March 2024, is not expected to launch in India anytime soon. Hyundai will primarily focus on its massively successful midsize and compact SUVs.

Prior to discontinuation, the Tucson was one of the most premium SUVs in its price segment. It featured a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster. Other features included multi-terrain modes, panoramic sunroof, cruise control, wireless charging, and smartphone connectivity. Last year, it was awarded a 5-star safety rating by the Bharat NCAP. A Level 2 ADAS package boosted the safety quotient of the SUV.

The Hyundai Tucson also had one of the most versatile powertrains in its segment. The SUV came in petrol and diesel engine options. The 2.0-litre petrol engine produced a maximum power output of 154hp and 192Nm of torque. It was mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-litre diesel engine generated a maximum power output of 184hp and 416Nm of torque. It was mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The higher diesel variants were also available with a 4-wheel drive.

The unsold Hyundai Tucson stock is currently available with a discount package worth up to Rs 25,000. Buyers can opt for an exchange bonus worth Rs 20,000 or a scrappage bonus of Rs 25,000. No cash offers are available for the SUV.

Final Thoughts

At the time of discontinuation, the Hyundai Tucson range was priced between Rs 27.32 lakh and Rs 33.50 lakh. It rivalled the likes of the Citroen C5 Aircross, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Jeep Compass. As of now, Hyundai does not plan to fill the ‘big’ SUV gap in its portfolio.
